WVU ties air rifle program record – WVU Athletics

COLUMBUS, Ohio (January 25, 2025) The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University air rifle team tied an air rifle program record en route to wins over No. 11 Ohio State and No. 17 Morehead State on Saturday morning at Converse Hall in Columbus.

The Mountaineers hit 4,756 (2,363 SB – 2,393 AR), the Buckeyes hit 4,707 (2,332 SB – 2,375 AR) and the Eagles hit 4,663 (2,310 SB – 2,353 AR). West Virginia’s mark in the air rifle tied the program record that was set last season, while all three marks in the all-around, small barrel and air rifle are season highs.

It marks the eighth ranked opponent the Mountaineers have defeated this season. The wins extended the Mountaineers’ regular season winning streak to 24 straight games. WVU posted its season high in the small slot for the second straight weekend.

The Mountaineers topped the standings, taking the top seven spots in a field of 25.

For small barrel and air rifle, seniors Gavin Barnick and Natalie Perrinsophomores Lauri Sira and Lake Griffin and freshman Ashlyn Blake served as counterattacks of the match.

Barnick tied a career-high with his total score of 1193. He shot a career-high 594 in small-bore rifle and added a season-high 599 in air rifle. The Menasha, Wis. native swept the podium for the second weekend in a row, edging out second place by three points.

Syrja finished second with a career-high total score of 1190. He added a career-high score of 592 in small barrel and a season-high score of 598 in air rifle.

Lake earned third place on the day with a 1,187 after scores of 589 in small barrel and 598 in air rifle. His air rifle score was the second best in the field and matched his career high. Blake finished fourth with 1185, producing 588 for small barrel and 597 for air rifle.

Freshman Camryn Lager 1185 (587 SB – 598 AR) finished fifth, while Perrin 1184 (586 SB – 598 AR) finished just behind in sixth. Perrin achieved season highs in both the minor and overall scores.

Jennifer Kocher 1180 (584 SB – 596 AR), freshman Jacob Wiseman 1178 (583 SB – 595 AR) and sophomore Maxim Duncan 1169 (582 SB – 587 AR) also competed in the event.

The Mountaineers close out the weekend trip tomorrow against Akron, with the game scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET at the Robert A. Pinn Shooting Range.
