Spanish Springs seizes the third regional basketball crown for boys – Reno Gazette Journal

Nothing like a court shower to celebrate the Third Regional School Championship.

Five years after their previous large -class regional championship, the Spanish Springs are back on the top of the Basketball boys in North Nevada.

The Spanish Springs escaped from Damonte’s ranch in the third quarter, after which the players escaped after coach Kyle Penny to throw away the water bucket over him to celebrate their 67-49 victory over the Mustings in the 4A-Sever title on Saturday in Saturday at Spanish Springs.

Spanish Springs led, 26-25, at halftime, when Jr. Brade Huml struck a 3-chain of the Zummer. But the cougities surpassed the mustard, 21-1, in the third quarter, thanks to the suffocating defensive efforts that led to multiple turnover.

The Spanish Springs will play a ranch on 20:00 Friday at Valley High School in Las Vegas in the 4A State Tournament.

Penny said this was his first court shower after playing.

He credit the elderly to provide solid efforts throughout the season.

“We remain unbeaten in the League and then do it in the playoff setting where everything can happen. They are a special group and this starts with our elderly people who just work in their tail every day,” Penny said. “They just set the standard. They define our culture.”

The Spanish Springs defeated Damonte Ranch, 67-49 for the regional basketball title of boys 4A-north on Saturday in Spanish Springs.

The Spanish Springs also won regional titles in 2018 and 2020.

Penny said his team had settled on the break after he was on the edge in the first half.

“We said at half time, well we played through it. We have to establish ourselves. We have to be executed. We have to go inside. We have to get better photos,” Penny said.

Owen Hensley and Taner Bowers scored 12 points for the cougities, Jaden Acosta had 11, and Humel and Travis Lee added nine.

Bowers, a senior, said the players dreamed of winning the regional championship because they were young children in the Spanish Springs youth programs.

He said the pressure is now on Cougars to be the only team from the north in the 4A state tournament.

“We have to introduce the North,” Bowers said. “Show that we deserve two large (school teams). And we will win our first national championship.”

Jeria Machias led the Damonte ranch with 19 points, Kin Wong had 11, and Zack Stanko added 10.
