Remembering one of the biggest snowstorms in South Carolina 52 years later -wpde.com

On this day 52 years ago, February 11, one of the largest blizzards in the recorded history of South Carolina was over, ending with extremely rare sums in Pee Dee, border girdle, Grand Strand and Midlands.

This event is often called the Great Southeast Snow Storm in Meteorological Records, covering from February 9 to February 11. Blitsar threw snow from Texas to Florida and Alabama and Virginia.

Cold front in the days before this blizzard brought a much colder than normal, northern air in the region.

This front stopped over the Atlantic, over part of Florida and in the bay. This later gave rise to a low -pressure zone, igniting the rare blizzard, as the moisture spread over the southeast has become ice, snow and snow into cold air.

The low -pressure system traced from the bay through Florida, and out in the Atlantic, northeast.

The biggest of the whole storm fell in Midlands of South Carolina.

The recorded snowfall struck two feet in parts of Midlands such as Rimini, South Carolina, which holds the record for the largest snow to fall into this blizzard. The room in general in this storm fell with a heavy band from Barnuel and Bamberg to Florence County (in pink above).

The big strand received approximately the foot snow, and the Pee Dee and Border belt received between one to two feet of snow.

This rare event has fallen into history textbooks as the second largest snowfall in Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach. The largest snowfall ever registered with Myrtle Beach has happened around Chritmaas in 1989.

The snow is rare for myrtle Beach, but even in 2025, the area recorded another unusual snow event in January. This snowstorm also made five the biggest lists of the area’s snow.
