The mandatory evacuations were commissioned in Sierra Madre on Thursday morning against the background of the coming threat of mud and flows of debris, but some residents said they remained placed.

Police officers were spotted going from door to door in the canyon community to warn people about the order. Those who chose not to leave were asked to sign a form recognizing that they had decided to stay behind.

This includes an 82-year-old woman who lost her home in Altadan and temporarily stayed in Sierra Madre.

“I have to be positive. What else will I do? I have to start over,” she said.

Resident Ted Saraf said his house survived after the fire in Ethan, but it was really close. He also chose to stay home during the storm instead of evacuating.

“I’m completely confident. The city has done everything that can, they raised the barricades, gave out (sand bags) … And everyone is ready for whatever happens this afternoon,” he told Eywitness News.

Fifteen homes in Sierra Madre were destroyed, in addition to hundreds more in Altadan, from the Fire in Ethan last month. About 1000 people in the scarring area are below the mandatory evacuation order, while another 12 720 are under a warning of evacuation.
