The shocking trade of Dallas Maverix at five-time All-Star Luka Doncic in Los Angeles Lakers caught NBA players, specialists, fans and even stars involved in the deal outside the security. And as Doncic himself acknowledged during his opening press conference on Tuesday, the trade, which he did not yet understand the justification behind him, was “difficult” for him to process in the hours and days after.

And he was not the only one.

Former teammate Doncic Kiri Irving spoke to reporters on Tuesday after the loss of Dallas 118-116 to Philadelphia 76ers and shared his heartbreaking reaction to the club of his friend and a former teammate.

“Just really shocked,” Irving said. “You just don’t imagine that you will get ready to fall asleep and then you will understand such news. It is still a grieving process right now. I miss my Hermano.”

Irving was distributed to Mavericks in February 2023, officially introducing into the Doncic-Rield era in Dallas. And while friendship did not flourish overnight, the two cultivated a lasting friendship on and off the court, thanks partly to the pre -season trips to Madrid and Abu Dhabi, where the two began to form a brotherhood.

This connection between the two was also obvious on the court, as Mavericks, after missing the playoffs after the 2022-23 trade, reached the NBA finals in 2023-24, where they were eventually defeated by Boston Celtics.

At a press conference after the victory of Mavericks playoffs over Los Angeles Clippers last summer, the brotherhood between the two stars was obvious. Donchic credits the positive energy of Irving. Irving praised Doncic for helping him grow as a leader.

This connection and the success that the two have found as a result is part of what Doncic trade is so difficult to process Irving.

“This is a business, it’s over my pay rating and I just have to adapt and be ready to welcome in my new teammates with open arms and look ready to go back to Dallas to talk in front of our Fans, Irving said. “I know they feel it too. And I feel it, guys.”

“So at home when you see it from afar, it hurts.”
