Nairobi’s residents were at a heartbreaking surprise on Friday, February 14, 2024, as Deputy Inspectors (Digs) Eliud Lagat (Kenya Police Service) and Gilbert Masengeli (Administrative Police Service) celebrated Valentine’s Day by distributing flowers to passers -by in the central business area (CBD).

The two senior police officers were spotted walking on Avenue Harak, carrying boxes full of red roses, hugging the spirit of love and recognition on a special day.

Dig Masengeli uses a more formal approach, hotly congratulated the residents and handed them flowers with a smile.

Men and women also received roses, which made the moment of inclusion.

On the other hand, Lagut is more enthusiastic with women’s residents, sharing hugs and laughter and even posing for quick photo shoots while giving roses one by one.

While the Nairians were touring their day, the surprising floral giving left many smiles, with many stopping their daily procedures to receive unexpected gifts.

The officers’ friendly gestures were in contrast to the usual perception of law enforcement, depicting them in a more accessible and community-oriented light.

Their unique engagement added an additional touch of joy, showing the softer, more connected side of the National Police Service.

Valentine’s festivities throughout the city were in full swing, with companies, streets and restaurants decorated in red and white to mark the case.

Meaning of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day, celebrated annually on February 14, is a global occasion dedicated to expressing love, love and appreciation among partners, friends and family members.

The origin of the festive trace back to ancient Rome, where it is believed to have been inspired by the legend of St. Valentine, a priest who opposed the ban of Emperor Claudius II for marriages for young soldiers, secretly formalizing weddings.

Over time, Valentine’s Day has become a widespread tradition of love and devotion, marked by the exchange of gifts, flowers and heart messages.

Today, Valentine’s Day is observed in many countries, with people celebrating in different ways.

In Western cultures, couples exchange romantic gifts, while in other regions the day is also seen as an opportunity to evaluate friends, family members and even colleagues.

Businesses, especially florists, restaurants and confectionery stores, see a jump in sales while people indulge in special treats for their loved ones.

In addition, the day is covered for charity acts, with organizations and people using it as an opportunity to distribute the kindness and support of less luck.
