First World Problems and Solutions

Humanity is doing far better in this centuries than in the prior. Despite what the news may tell you, crime and death rates have been dropping consistently for decades. A global economy and systems of trade have made life much easier for people.

This ease has come in many forms. The spread of health sciences has allowed previously incurable diseases to be treated or vaccinated against. Innovations in plumbing and sewage systems have drastically cut proliferation of deadly infections in many nations. Finally, agricultural sciences and methods have advanced to the point that if people wanted to, they could end world hunger.

That last statement, combined with the tendency for citizens of more developed nations to lead a sedentary life is beginning to backfire. Obesity rates worldwide are skyrocketing. In the U.S. approximately 40%  of the population is considered obese and other countries are following suit. However, this doesn’t have to be the case.

First world problems

If you live in the west, chances are you have easy transport available to you. More developed areas tend to have at least acceptable public transport like buses and trains. Major cities have more complex and convenient systems like subway systems, local and express buses and access to independent drivers through companies like Uber.

The advances in agriculture have detached people from an understanding of how food gets to their plate. Most people in major cities have never had to fish or hunt and don’t understand how butchery works. This all aids in breeding the “I want it and I want it now” attitude that is so common in the west and doesn’t lend itself to a respect for animals and the environment.

The self-indulgence also doesn’t do much to direct one towards caring for their bodies. If health isn’t required to live, it becomes a commodity. As a commodity, it’s become optional. I’ll say that again. Health has become an option. In recent years, people tend not to take this option into consideration, until they’ve become at risk.

How the workplace contributes

The goal of a “good” education in the eyes of many is to land a job that one can relax at. Most want a job with a comfortable chair and desk. Avoiding manual labor has been a goal of the upper class throughout the majority of human history. The difference with our predecessors, however, was a lack of the medical knowledge to save people from basic illnesses and fairly short lifespans anyway.

Having that vaunted desk job likely means you spend at least six hours of your day sitting. This puts you at exponential risk for a variety of conditions and cancers. However, this risk can be mitigated quite easily. So if you’re interested in making sure you take off that body so you can spend all your hard earned money well into retirement, keep reading.

First world solutions

Assuming you are in a more developed country and have a nice desk job, chances are you have the option to get up every once in a while. Do so. Get up every thirty minutes and shake the rust off for a minute or two. Doing so will bring blood back to that probably stiff back of yours and give you a mental break from emails.

If you’re more a mover, take the time to do some sit-ups, push-ups or air-squats. If you want, get creative with any type of workout. The goal is just to get moving. Just moving every thirty minutes lowers your risk of health conditions by thirty percent. That’s definitely a worthwhile trade-off.

If you’re at a more liberal office, swap out your desk chair for a Swiss exercise ball. This will force you to engage muscles to maintain balance and posture. For those that want to cut out sitting entirely, standing desk has gained popularity. Just don’t lock your knees for long periods of time.

Your local or home gym

After a long day in front of a computer, chances are the last thing you want to do go back out. The benefits of doing so definitely outweigh the cost, however. This is especially true if your gym is in your garage. If you’re motivated to do a high-intensity workout, have at it, but, here are some ideas for those of you that may just want to burn some calories and get a light sweat going.

The importance of cardiovascular fitness and its effect on your health can’t be understated. Twenty to thirty minutes of moderate effort work is all you’d really need. You can get on a treadmill, rowing machines or any of these elliptical by Indoor Ellipticals and be well on your way to burning fat and improving your fitness.

The only person truly responsible for you is you. Love yourself. You’re all you’ve got.
