Location
Eretria is situated in Evia, the second largest island in Greece after Crete, and 22 km southeast of the island's capital Chalkida. Eretria is bathed by the waters of the South Evian Gulf along its entire length and fringed with clean, sandy beaches.

Eretria is only 110 kilometers far from Athens and is connected to the Greek mainland by a bridge.

Ancient Eretria (22 km SE of Chalkida)

1. The Ancient Theatre built in 326 BC Following the ancient route from Chalkida to Malaconda, visitors will see and be impressed by the Ancient Theatre of Eretria. The monument is situated in the area and connected with the peak period of the city. It was built in 326 B.C. on an artificial hill and the place was determined by the place of “Dionysos Temple”. The theatre of Eretria is built with materials, which are especially sensitive and fragile and for this way it implied special ability and skills by the sculptors of that period. It had a seating capacity of 6.300 seats.


2. The Archaeological Museum
(on the road from Chalkida to Aliveri)

It has a rich collection of ceramic works, remarkable sculptures from the classical and hellenistic times and tomb inscriptions other Archaeological Sites: a) The Temple of the Wreath Crowned Apollo, b) The Temple of Dionysos with an altar, c) The Issio-a temple dedicated to the Egyptian deity-Issis, d) The wrestling place, e) The ruins of the ancient Acropolis, f) Roman Baths and, g) part of the Ancient Wall.

Entertainment


Eretria offers a wide range of entertainment activities. At the picturesque sea-shore sidewalk one can find clubs, cafes, restaurants, taverns, creperies, and pizza shops. There are also opportunities to work out in athletic facilities, gyms, or simply walk along the beautiful beaches.

Chalkida
The Capital City of Evia is beautiful Chalkida, an enchanting pictorial synthesis. A cosmopolitan city with many famous archaeological sites and a particular charm and nobility. Chalkida is mostly famous for the strange and rare phenomenon of the tide changing its direction every 6 hours. Weather
Greece has an almost ideal climate-plenty of sunshine and dry air most of the year. During spring and early fall, days are very comfortable, with temperatures ranging from 15CO to 25Co. Average daily temperature for September is 13-30CO and for October 10-21Co.

Clothing:
Bring light cloths and maybe one-two jackets to be used during the night. Even in winter, there is not too much cold in Greece.

The single ticket cost is 0.70€ for trips on one or two successive zones. There is a day ticket at 2.90€ (sold at the ticket offices) valid for 24hours past the ticket validating machines for multiple journeys using all public transportation modes –AM (Athens Metro), ISAP (Metro), ETHEL (buses), ILPAP (trolley-buses) upon its first validation and for one boarding in any of the Airport bus lines (in this case it must be validated once more inside the bus). Outside the Metro stations there are bus stations for your further transportation.

Tram
The Tram has two lines:
Line 1: Zappeio-Fix-Nea Smyrni-P.Faliro-Helliniko
Line 2: Neo Faliro (ISAP)-Agios Kosmas-Glyfada.
The single ticket costs 0.70€ for a trip in one direction and for 60’ following its validation and 0.30€ for persons under 18.

Electricity
In Greece, electricity is 220 volts AC, 50Hz. If necessary, bring plug adapters.

Vaccinations
The U.S. Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following vaccinations to travellers to Greece or Turkey:

- Hepatitis A vaccine or immune globulin (IG).

CDC also recommends that all travellers be up to date with the normal childhood vaccines:

No-smoking policy
Greece has adopted a no-smoking policy in public transportation and public places. Most restaurants and cafes are divided in smoking and non-smoking areas. However, don’t expect that all Greeks respect rules!

Shopping in Greece

Souvenirs
Goods from all over Greece are available in stores in Athens. Specialities include handicrafts, gold and silver jewellery, embroidered shirts and dresses, fabrics, pottery, onyx, marble, alabaster and leather goods. These are available in the main shopping area downtown around Syntagma, Omonia and Kolonaki squares as well as in Monastiraki flea market, where shopping sometimes involves bargaining.

Sightseeing in Athens


Acropolis
The holy rock of Athens. The citadel and the sanctuary of the city in antiquity. The Acropolis entrance fee, of 12€, also allows you to visit the Theatre of Dionysos, Keramikos, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Ancient Agora and Roman Agora within a day.

The Greek Parliament
The plain, neoclassical building which is the Parliament of the Greeks today was built between 1834-1838 as the palace of the first kings.

Panathinaikon Stadium
This beautiful marble stadium was built in the 4th century BC. It has been restored twice and its capacity is 70.000 spectators. In 1896 the first modern Olympic games were held in this stadium.

National Archaeological Museum
One of the most important museums of the country, where you can follow the Greek history through a very rich collection of exhibits. Outstanding among them are the collections of the prehistoric exhibits and the sculptures.

Plaka “the heart of the city”
At the foot of Acropolis, there spreads out, the most alive part of the city, an open exhibition of the history of the Athens and a panorama of people, monuments and tastes too. You can walk through its amazingly picturesque paved streets. At every corner, you can have an opportunity to do your shopping.

Monastiraki
A crowded, busy part of the city where a constant big bazaar takes place. Some columns from the Adrian’s library are in site, a mosque that has been turned into a library and a beautiful small church, are some of the interesting monuments of this place.
