APOLLO RESULTS

Overview

Aim: 

The aim of this WP is to  produce evidence on the burden of injuries in terms of hospitalization episodes in EU countries together with information on the efficiency of relevant injury prevention interventions, relevant to European policy makers

Module 1

Burden of injuries

  • This module assesses the burden of injuries in participating European countries, with special emphasis on the burden of non-fatal injuries and their economic impact. In addition, selection and implementation of burden indicators relevant for injury prevention monitoring in the region will be carried out.

 

Module 2

Economic consequences of injury

  • This module is aimed at supporting EU countries in calculating the economic consequences of injury for purposes of priority setting in prevention. Dr Saakje Mulder from the Consumer Safety Institute, Netherlands is the leader of this module.

 

Module 3

Improvements on severity measures of injuries

  • This module is aimed at reviewing state of the art in injury severity assessment methods and contribute to the improvement of the ICD9-AIS automatic conversion method (toward AIS/ISS based severity scores) consisting in an extension of its applicability toward important body parts not yet fully considered in existing methods. Mr. Alessio Pitidis from the Istituto Superiore Di Sanita, Italy is the leader of this module.

Module 4

Development of exposure indicators

  • This module aims to develop a systematic way of studying and monitoring indicators for injuries. Vicky Kalampoki, collaborator of the University of Athens, Greece, is the coordinator of this module.  

Module 5

Cost effective interventions for injury prevention

  • This module is aimed at identifying what is known about social and economic costs and consequences of injuries and the methods used to estimate these costs. In addition, it identifies the cost effectiveness of strategies to reduce socio-economic costs and consequences of injuries in Europe. The outcome of these tasks will be a report on the efficient strategies to reduce the burden of injures in Europe. Dr. David McDaid from the London School of Economics, UK is the leader of this module.  

Module 6

Policy recommendations for injury prevention

  • This module will analyze success cases analyze success cases of policies that have been implemented in EU MS, in relation to their investment cost and its expected return. Dr. Yannis Skalkidis from the University of Athens, Greece is the leader of this module. This module has just started and it is preliminary to report completed tasks.
